What ONVIF actually is.
ONVIF is the reason you can buy a camera from one company and record it with software from another. It is also the setting that most often needs switching on before any of that works.
ONVIF is an open standard for how cameras and software talk to each other. A camera that supports it can be found, interrogated and streamed by any software that also supports it — which is why VISEC works with 99% of ONVIF IP cameras whoever made them, and why you are not tied to one manufacturer's recorder or app.

RTSP carries the video. ONVIF is the conversation that arranges it, plus everything else — discovery, capabilities, inputs and outputs. A camera can offer RTSP without ONVIF, and then you must supply the exact stream address yourself. ONVIF is what removes that step.
Several major brands ship with ONVIF disabled, and a few require a separate ONVIF user account that the admin login will not substitute for. That single detail is behind most "my camera will not connect" problems. Enabling it is a couple of settings, and the location differs by brand — there are setup pages for twenty makes, and a checklist for when a camera still does not appear.

Does my camera support ONVIF?
Most IP cameras sold today do. Battery and app-only consumer models frequently do not, because they are designed to work solely with their maker's own service.
Is ONVIF less secure?
No more than any other access. What matters is the same as always: a strong password, and not exposing cameras directly to the internet.
Do I lose features by using ONVIF instead of the brand's own app?
Occasionally a brand-specific extra is not exposed. What you gain is every camera in one program, and recordings that are not tied to one manufacturer.
