NVR box or PC software?
Both record cameras. They fail differently, cost differently and age differently, and the honest answer depends on which of those you care about most.
- It is one appliancePlug it in, plug the cameras in, done. Nothing to maintain but firmware.

- Mixed camera brandsMost NVRs are happiest with their own brand. Software that speaks ONVIF takes 99% of IP cameras whoever made them, plus analog through a video server and ordinary USB cameras.

A PC needs looking after: Windows updates, a drive that will eventually fail, and enough processor and graphics for the number of cameras and the amount of recognition you switch on. If nobody is going to do that, an appliance is the better engineering decision.

Can I use a PC and keep my existing NVR?
Yes. Many cameras can be read by more than one system at once, and an NVR that publishes RTSP can often be added to VISEC by stream address. Run both while you decide.
Is a PC noisier or hungrier than an NVR?
Usually yes on both counts. If the machine sits in an office rather than a cupboard, that matters.
How many cameras will one PC take?
Sites commonly run 16 to 100, and up to around 200, depending on the PC, the resolution and how much recognition is enabled.
