Free camera software: where's the catch?
"Free" covers at least five different business models, and only some of them leave you with working software in six months. It is worth knowing which one you are downloading.
- A trialFull features, then it stops. Thirty days of free is not free software — check whether there is a clock before you build anything on it.
- Free up to a camera limitThe complete program, capped at one or two cameras, with no time limit. You can rely on this indefinitely at that size.
- Free but crippledNo recording, no alerts, a watermark on the video, or playback locked behind the paid tier. Fine for looking, useless as a system.
- Free client, paid serviceThe software costs nothing because the recording lives in a subscription cloud. The monthly fee is the product.
- Genuinely open sourceNo cost and no vendor, but you are the support desk. Excellent if that appeals, painful if it does not.
- Does it expire? If yes, it is a trial.
- Where do the recordings live?Your drive, or somebody's cloud on a monthly bill?
- Is recording in the free tier?Live view only is not surveillance.
- What happens if you stop paying? With a one-time license, nothing. With a subscription, usually everything.
- Are the features extra?Plate recognition in particular is often billed per camera, per plate or per month.
The second kind. One camera is free for life and it is the complete program — recording, motion alerts, playback, remote viewing, plate recognition, QR reading and access control. No card, no email address, no clock. Paid licenses add cameras, not features, and they are a one-time purchase with no subscription — see the licenses.
Quick answers.
Why would anyone give away the whole program?
Because one camera proves it works on your cameras better than any specification sheet. People who need more than one camera come back.
Is the free license time-limited?
No. It does not expire, and it needs no card and no email address.
Is plate recognition really in the free tier?
Yes, with no per-plate fee. It is the same engine the paid licenses use.
What is the catch, then?
It runs on Windows and one camera at a time. If you need several cameras, that is when you pay — once.
Try it on one camera.
The free license is the complete program — recording, alerts, plate recognition, QR reading and access control. It does not expire.
