Case study · retail property

A shopping centre that had to stay discreet.

An upmarket mixed-use centre wanted its shoppers and tenants protected without the building feeling watched. That made the specification as much about restraint as about coverage.

The problem.

A centre trading on being a pleasant destination cannot look like a secure facility. Restaurants, lifestyle shops and their customers needed real coverage of a large, architecturally open building, installed so that it did not intrude on the thing people came for.

What was done

The deployment.

A security consultant was brought in to draft the tender, with the camera platform decided up front so installers were bidding on the same technical basis. Several were assessed on technical knowledge and pricing before the contract was awarded, and the cameras were specified and placed for discretion as well as coverage.

Outcome

The result.

A staffed control room with daily responsibility for the whole centre, on cameras chosen for image quality rather than presence.

How this is done today

The same job in a smaller centre now runs on a Windows PC rather than a dedicated room — see cameras for shops and retail.
